WELCOME TO THE FRIENDS OF ST ALKMUND’S WHITCHURCH

The Friends of St Alkmund’s Whitchurch (FOSAW) specifically raises funds to assist with the maintenance of the fabric of the church building.  We are a group of people who have a connection to the beautiful Grade I listed church in Whitchurch.  That connection may be through attending services, family links to the church, or simply a love of the beautiful building, that is a focal point of the town, and a desire to see its splendour maintained for years to come.

St Alkmund’s Church

There has been a church on this site for many centuries and it has been a centre for both Christian worship and other community activities. It is a place where all are welcome and God can be found.

The church does not receive any Government or central Church of England funding, but manages to meet current annual running costs of £110,000. However, St Alkmund’s is a valuable part of the town’s heritage and needs to keep the church building, grounds and parish hall in good repair in order to fulfil the obligations to God and to the community.

As the church is a Grade I listed building, any maintenance work which is required is very costly and it is necessary to raise funds to undertake some urgent remedial projects as soon as possible. Church members are continually researching methods of financing this work, and whilst several grant applications have been successful, there is still a shortfall.

This church was dedicated in October 1713.

Celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary included the setting up of a Friends organisation to raise funds to maintain the buildings.
